The VESL teachers and staff hope you enjoy these materials. We are very happy to have you as a student! We want to help you learn the English that you need to become a good machine shop worker.

WHAT YOU WILL LEARN  IN THIS COURSE:

Directions: Read the material below and do the activity.

In this course you will learn:

  1. The English language you need to communicate on the job as a machinist.
  2. The things that machinists do.
  3. The names of machines, parts on the machines, and what machines can do.
  4. The names of a machinist’s hand tools and measuring tools and what they can do.
  5. Ways to get more information, if you don’t understand when the teacher or supervisor tells you to do something.
  6. Practical methods for reading machinists’ books and other reading materials.
  7. The mathematics that you will need as a machinist.

In this course you will not learn:

  1. How to operate the different machines.
    (You will learn to use the machines later in the shop class.)
  1. All the technical things you need to know as a machinist. (Your job now is to learn as much basic language as possible so you will understand your skills teacher and the other students in the machine shop.)
