Lesson 2: Accidents and How to Prevent Them

Accidents are Serious

It is very important to know that you have only one pair of eyes and one pair of hands. If you hurt or lose your eyes or your hands, you cannot replace them.

For the reading, cover one of your eyes with your hand. It will be much more difficult to read with only one eye. Cover you eye now then read the material inside the box.

Reading with One Eye

You are reading this material with only one eye. In a moment you will take your hand away and be able to see with both eyes. But imagine that your eye was gone forever and that the other eye didn’t work very well either. Your whole life would be more difficult, and you might also be unable to work.

Accidents can happen to your eyes in the machine shop. When the machine tools turn, cut, mill, grind or saw, sharp pieces of metal (chips) can fly through the air and hit your eyes. Chemicals, fire, sparks, and dust can also injure (hurt) your eyes.

And so it is important to protect your eyes with some type of safety glasses. You only have one pair of eyes!

It is also important to protect your hands, arms, and other parts of the body. You can lose a hand or a finger in the powerful machines in the machine shop.

NOW TAKE YOUR HAND AWAY FROM YOUR EYES.

Look Ma! No Hand!

Take out a piece of paper and a pen or pencil.  Now answer the questions about what you have just read.
Imagine your writing hand is gone. WRITE WITH THE HAND THAT YOU DO NOT USUALLY USE FOR WRITING. USE YOUR USUAL WRITING HAND TO COVER ONE OF YOUR EYES.

CROSSWORD PUZZLE

Accidents and Safety

When you got to the machine shop class, you will need to learn the rules of safety for the shop. Let’s learn some of them now. We want to know how to prevent accidents, to stop accidents before they can happen. Here are two SAFETY RULES that will help prevent injuries and accidents:

  • Report all unsafe conditions, practices, tools and equipment immediately to the instructor.
  • Report all injuries or illness immediately to the instructor.

Explanation: The instructor is in charge of the work area and is responsible for the safety of the students while they’re there. The instructor has many years of experience and will know what to do if someone is injured or becomes sick while working.

If you have any of these difficulties, you should tell the instructor. If you see that another worker is having any of these problems, you should tell the instructor. Some of these situations are dangerous and the person in trouble may need help immediately. Tell the instructor at once (immediately).

It is important that you take care of the problem without delay (immediately). So go to the instructor and tell them right away (immediately). Get the help you need – that is part of the instructor’s job.

Words that Mean the Same

At once means the same thing as immediately. Write down two other ways to say immediately:

  • at once = immediately.
