Dr. Pete Stafford has taught Vocational ESL for several years and has written Vocational ESL material for the San Diego Community College District, Mira Costa College (Oceanside, CA), and the Oceanside Unified School District.
The vocational areas of his VESL curriculum-writing and teaching include Machine Shop Technology, Auto Technology and Science, Major Appliance Repair, and Office Skills.
The methodology of writing these materials includes a beginning survey of the language requirements of training for a particular vocation and the requirements of the later job situation. Samples of the reading materials required in the course and from the workplace are obtained; such materials may include textbooks, handouts developed by the vocational instructor, and documents and forms used on the job.
Next an outline is developed, paralleling the sequence of the vocational teacher’s instructional units. The process thereafter continues in a collaborative manner, seeking expert reaction to rough draft; two kinds of expertise are sought: a first critique from the ESL instructional perspective and a second from those who can check the technical accuracy of the vocational material. Materials are field-tested with students.
The materials have been well received by students and teachers, both in San Diego and in Oceanside.
The Vocational English as a Second Language (VESL) and Vocational Adult Basic Education (VABE) and Workplace curriculum was developed in San Diego, California by staff of San Diego Community College District, Continuing Education, using a combination of funding from federal, state, and local sources.
Permission is given to the OTAN VESL/Workplace Clearinghouse to duplicate single copies of curriculum materials and distribute them at cost to teachers and education agencies for their use in the classroom or as models for curriculum development only. Permission is given to teachers and education agencies to duplicate individual lessons for classroom use only.
No other use of the materials, including publication or incorporation in materials for publication, may be made without the express permission of San Diego Community College District.
Summary of changes made to the original:
- Module 1, Introduction, will be updated for online job posts and descriptions.
- Module 4, Math will be updated for use of TI-84 calculator.
- Module 5, Blueprint Reading, will be updated to Print Reading. A small section will be added to address the historical use of the term “blueprint”.
- Module 9 includes instruction specific to a machine tool textbook. These pages will be revised to refer to the textbook MHCC relies on: Krar, Gill, Smit, and Gerritson. 2020. Technology of Machine Tools. McGraw Hill. ISBN-13: 978-1260087932; ISBN-10: 126008793X
- Various minor updates will occur throughout, such as the reference that early CNC used punched tapes to control the machine tools in Module 7.
- Layout will be updated. Typographical errors will be revised. Recordings for various student conversations, listening activities, and quiz and test prompts will be produced and embedded for student and/or teacher access. Depending on budget and time constraints, some video production may also occur.
