Introduction
The motivation for accepting this assignment is grounded in my efforts of not identifying any other Open Education Resource (OER) about metallurgy. There are many open materials generated out of southeast Asia that offer amazing information and complete classes online. However, they are intended for material science and various engineering students. Working within the hot metals trades of machine tool technology, welding, and related metal working career paths, my student tradespeople require an operational use of metals for production and fabrication.
My intention is to provide an adequate first draft of metallurgy knowledge intended for tradespeople and students so they can understand the transformative effects of heat and cooling on various metals and their mechanical properties. This basic knowledge needs to include chemistry, descriptions of physical and mechanical properties, and the span of heat treating methods employed to manipulate their parts.
My particular students are landed immigrants and refugees. I needed a first draft of source material in order to adapt it for learners of English training to enter the metal working careers.
The contents herein are a vast mixture of resources available within the sphere of free information. I have done the best I can to vet all information adequately. I am not a subject matter expert. If you find errors in this publication, please contact me so that I may correct them for future readers.
