Multiplication Equations
Multiplication is one of the basic calculations of mathematics. These calculations are called operations. The numbers in a multiplication operation are called factors.
Let’s put together the language of multiplication signs (×, •, *) and the equal sign (=) to make a type of math sentence that is called an equation.
An equation has numbers on each side of the equal sign. The values for each side must be equal. Let’s see how we can say multiplication equations.
For example:
4 × 9 = 36 is said as “4 times 9 equals 36”
40 • 9 = 360 is “40 times 9 equals 360”
400 * 9 = 3,600 “400 times 9 equals 3,600”
Do you remember the two different ways to say the multiplication signs (×, •, *) and all the different ways to say the equal sign (=)?
For multiplication signs, we say, “times” or “multiplied by”.
For the equal sign, we can say any of the following:
- equals
- makes
- is
- is equal to
- is equivalent to
- is the same as
- is the same amount as
- is the same value as
