Multiplication

The parts of a multiplication problem are called a multiplicand and a multiplier.  The first number is the multiplicand. It is the number that is multiplied a number of times. The second number, which follows the times sign (x) is the multiplier. It is the number of times the first number is multiplied.

For example,

   7   is the multiplicand
x 5   is the multiplier

This means 7 is multiplied 5 times.  These two words are not very common. The numbers of a multiplication problem are also called factors. They are both factors.  A lot of people find this term easier to remember.

The answer for multiplication is called a “product”.

   7   factor
x 5   factor
35   product
