Division Equations
The basic calculations of addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and exponents are called operations. Once an equal sign is added with answer, the operation turns into an equation.
In the last section we learned, the numbers in a subtraction operation are called divisor and dividend. The division phrase will determine which number comes first.
Let’s put together the language of the division signs ( ÷ , : , / , ⟌ ) and the equal sign (=) together.
An equation has numbers on each side of the equal sign. The values for each side must be equal.
Let’s see how we can say division equations.
For example,
9 ÷ 3 = 3
is said as “nine divided by three makes three”
50: 10 = 5
is “50 divided by 10 equals 5”
412/103 = 4
“412 divided by 103 is the same as 4”
2
52⟌104
“52 divided into 104 is equal to 2”
Remember, there only three phrases to say the division sign.
- divided by
- divided into
These phrases will help identify which number comes first and second.
Your Turn — Practice writing words into numbers for division equations
Your Turn — Practice writing numbers into words for division equations with the phrase “divided by”
Your Turn — Practice with the phrase “divided into” in division equations
Your Turn –Match the division equations with the correct words
Remember the third phrase used to say the division operation?
- goes into
When the “goes into” phrase is used, the answer is said differently.
For example:
2
5⟌10
“5 goes into 10 2 times”
The answer tells us how many times five goes into ten. Five goes into ten two times.
2
6⟌12
“6 goes into 12 2 times”
The answer says that six goes into 12 two times.
4
4⟌16
“4 goes into 16 4 times”
The answer tells us that four goes into 16 four times.
“Times” is the main word used for multiplication. This example for division uses the language of multiplication in the answer.
For example:
Five times two is 10; therefore, five goes into 10 two times.
Six times two is 12; therefore, six goes into 12 two times.
Four times four is 16; therefore, four goes into 16 four times.
Your Turn — Practice the phrase “goes into” with division equations
Summary
- A division operation with an equal sign and an answer is a math equation.
