Addition Equations

The basic calculations of addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and exponents are called operations.  The numbers in an addition operation are called addends.

Let’s put together the language of addition (+) and the equal sign (=) to make a type of math sentence that is called an equation.

An equation has numbers on each side of the equal sign. The values for each side must be equal. Let’s see how we can say addition equations.

Notice

The words in the quotation marks (” “) are how we say or read out loud the math equation.

For example:

4 + 5 = 9 is said as “four plus five equals nine”

40 + 9 = 49 is “40 plus 9 equals 49”

412 + 9 = 421   “412 plus 9 equals 421”

Remember all the different ways to say the addition sign (+) and the equal sign (=)?
