Language about Math Answers
Here are other general words for “answer”. In English, we call these words with the same meaning “synonyms”. These words are not specific to any math operation.
- total
- result
- answer
These words are also nouns. They must also be in a phrase.
The words “total” and “result” use the exact same phrase as “sum”.
For example, with “total”
6 + 2 = 8 is said as, “the total of six plus two is eight.”
16 + 12 = 28 is said as, “the total of 16 plus 12 is 28.”
and with “result”
6 + 2 = 8 is said as, “the result of six plus two is eight.”
16 + 12 = 28 is said as, “the result of 16 plus 12 is 28.”

There is another phrase which uses answer words.
“the answer for”
For example,
6 + 2 = 8 is said as, “the answer for six plus two is eight.”
