Subtraction Equations
The basic calculations of addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and exponents are called operations. In the last section we learned, the numbers in a subtraction operation are called minuend for the first number and subtrahend for the second number.
Let’s put together the language of subtraction (-) and the equal sign (=) to make a math sentence called an equation.
An equation has numbers on each side of the equal sign. The values for each side must be equal. Let’s see how we can say subtraction equations.
For example,
9 – 4 = 5
is said as “nine take away four makes five”
40 – 9 = 31 is “40 minus 9 equals 31”
412 – 109 = 303
“412 subtracted by 109 is the same as 303”
521 – 299 = 222 “299 subtracted from 521 is equal to 222”
Remember all the different ways to say the subtraction sign (-) and the equal sign (=)?
